The Dos and Donts of Resume Editing
The Dos and Donts of Resume EditingThe Dos and Donts of Resume Editing Usually, practice makes perfect, but in the case of resume writing, meticulous editing and fine-tuning are what ll lead you to the perfect resume . However, keep in mind that refining your resume requires a very unique set of lenses to be able to see its flaws and imperfections. With so many contradictory guidelines and common misconceptions about what makes a job-winning resume, it s hard to know for sure what to change or where to even begin. To demystify some of the ambiguities surrounding the resume editing process, here s a hand-picked list of some of the fruchtwein important do s and don ts to be aware of during this stage.Do list your fruchtwein impressive and relevant achievements firstWhile you might have jotted down the different sections of your resume in whatever order they happened to pop into your mind, this is not always optimal. Instead, you want to move your most impressiv e accomplishments to the top of your resume. That way, your resume will make a great first impression as soon as the hiring manager begins reading it.Do optimize for applicant tracking systemsNo matter how good your resume looks to the human eye, it might still have trouble getting past applicant tracking systems . These resume robots are used by large organizations (and sometimes small ones too) to weed out unqualified candidates during the initial hiring process. They work by scoring your resume based on how well it matches the job description and meets the predefined requirements. Some common tactics to get past these robots include incorporating the appropriate keywords , formatting your resume properly, and utilizing standardized resume headers. For a more complete guide on how to beat these pesky programs, check out this detailed article .You might have forgotten to include them in your initial draft, but they re important to mention. Soft skills refer to the intangible a ssets that employers look in candidates, such as communication skills, problem-solving prowess, and teamwork ability. While you shouldnt list these soft skills in your Skills section, the bullet points on your resume should be written in a manner that implies that you possess them.Do tailor your resume for different jobsResume editing isn t a one and done deal. In fact, often times you ll need more than one resume at your disposal so you can submit the most appropriate one to the job youre applying for. This is why professional resume writers often craft multiple resumes for a single client. For example, suppose that you ve had working experience in both finance and accounting , but you re currently applying for a job that is strictly finance. You ll definitely make a stronger impression and appear to be a better fit by emphasizing your finance-related accomplishments while downplaying your accounting experience on the resume you submit.Do try getting your resume to f it exactly one pageWith your initial draft, your resume is usually never exactly one page in length. While you might read from other online sources that this is all fine and dandy, I always suggest that job seekers make the extra effort to get their resume to fit on one full page unless they have over 15 years of work experience . After all, why take the unnecessary risk of irritating a hiring manager who s fussy about resume length.Admittedly, sometimes it s hard to get it just right. Maybe you re having trouble filling the page up because you have little to no work experience . If you haven t already, consider adding in the names of the most impressive courses you ve taken in school, or perhaps include a summary or objective statement at the top. While it s great to have the mindset of leaving no stone unturned, everyone already assumes you have experience with Microsoft Word and Outlook . There s also no point in mentioning that you know English if it s obvious that you ve worked in an English-speaking country your entire life. Instead, save your precious resume real estate for more technical skills that are far more impressive. If you do know a second language though, be sure to mention it, as it s currently a very sought-after talent that companies love.Don t get overly fancy with pictures and colorsUnless you re in an industry like fashion or graphic design that openly encourages resumes with unique and aesthetically pleasing layouts , it s almost always better to stick with a basic resume template. This is true for a number of reasons. For one, hiring managers are used to seeing standard resume formats. They don t want to spend extra time getting accustomed to your unique layout. To be quite frank, some hiring managers won t even bother reading resumes that aren t formatted according to industry standards. They assume the resume is all style and no substance. On top of that, let s not forget that resumes need to appease the resume ro bots. As you might expect, robots are heartless and they don t care for pretty colors or aesthetics. In fact, they might have trouble processing your resume, and this could severely hurt your chances of moving past the first stage of the hiring process. You didn t help lead a group initiative. You spearheaded one. Always look to use stronger and more impressive power verbs at the beginning of your bullet points, while avoiding weaker ones like help or assisted. I see this all the time. The resume begins every one of its bullet points with a verb, but then suddenly, out of nowhere, one lone bullet point decides it s perfectly fine to start itself off with a noun. While it may seem like no big deal, some recruiters can get really ticked off by this inconsistency and conclude that you re not a detail-oriented job candidate. Just remember to keep things consistent it s not hard if you look out for itDon t forget to ask someone to proofreadIt s great that you took the time to edit and refine your resume . Now let your friends and family members help as well. If even professional writers and authors have editors to proofread and make changes to their works, then you should too. It s easy at times to think that what you wrote makes perfect sense, because after all, you wrote it But unfortunately, we re all prone to making some mistakes or suboptimal writing decisions that we simply can t catch and fix ourselves. So never skip this final step it might just be the most important onePeter Yang is a career coach, human resources expert, and professional resume writer. Top PMF Job Application Tips
Top PMF Job Application TipsTop PMF Job Application TipsTop PMF Job Application Tips Now that the PMF application is open, were inviting Certified Federal Career Coach, Kate Battiato to guest write our blog. Here are Kates top tipsSuccessfully navigating the PMF application process is its own unique challenge unlike any other you might have previously experienced. The points listed below can help you to not only familiarize yourself with the application and interview process, but also to better understand the big picture of what PMF has in store for you1) In the PMF, leadership style is everything. Dont dominate. Instead, collaborate, synergize. In preparing your PMF resume, and other application materials, dont feel like the program is looking for you to demonstrate your leadership qualities by the degree to which you take charge and personally tackle every issue that arises. In truth, its not about you. Its about identifying and developing committed public service leaders wh o can herausforderung solve collaboratively and thrive in the unique context of federal government service. In the federal workplace, leadership requires the ability to quickly adapt to political or global changes that agency staff have little or no control over. Keep in mind that the PMF reviewers are not necessarily looking for the archetypal Type A leader who steamrolls their way to success. Instead, theyre looking for individuals who will do well and be a good fit for the context of federal government service. This means being adaptable, flexible, and creative about how to lead by collaborative facilitation rather than fiat.2) Becoming a PMF Finalist is only the beginning. Just imagine, youve made it through the gauntlet of the online situational judgement and personality assessment, perfected your essays, nailed your in-person interview day and received the felicitous news that youve been selected as a PMF Finalist. After a few well-deserved happy dances, prepare to buckle down for the second half of your PMF journey, securing your placement. Your non-competitive hiring authority is good for 12 months from the date you are selected as a Finalist, and be prepared to use that as your number one talking point for the duration. Though the PMF is considered prestigious, and can be extremely helpful in obtaining a position in hard to access agencies like State and USAID, dont expect everyone in the federal government to be familiar with the program. Some agencies, especially those targeted by STEM applicants (e.g. USDA, NSF), have little to no familiarity with the program. This leaves finalists with the need to develop a tight elevator speech explaining what your status as a PMF Finalist means and how it can be of assistance to HR Specialists and Hiring Managers as a shortcut to filling positions. Network proactively to seek out specific offices youre interested in serving as a PMF, and be creative in pitching how a Presidential Management Fellow in the ir ranks would be of service to your agency of choice.3) Going through the process is valuable experience. Keep in mind that whether or not you ultimately land a placement as a Presidential Management Fellow, the process itself is a rich learning experience and great real-world practice which can help you master high-stakes job applications and interviews. These are marketable skills which the PMF process can help you build for a lifetime and apply inside or outside public service. How far you get in the process may itself be a great gauge for where you should focus your efforts in improving your job search game. Apply yourself and treat it as the learning opportunity, and you will position yourself to learn how you can demonstrate core competencies, such as collaborative facilitation, interpersonal problem solving and adaptability. These skills apply not only to future federal job searches, but also to private industry searches and success in landing your dream job, wherever th at may be. Heres what a career sponsor is, and why you might want one
Heres what a career sponsor is, and why you might want oneHeres what a career sponsor is, and why you might want oneThe average worker has at least one person in their life who serves as a berater. Maybe that person is an executive at another company or a family member who knows the ropes of the business world. Either way, the mentor offers advice and support, serving as a sounding board and career confidant.Thats all important, but the fact is, even the best mentor may not help you get that promotion youve been dying for or a plum job at a different company. For that kind of help, you need someone else. You need a sponsor.A mentor offers guidance and support, says an article from Workopolis. A sponsor goes to bat on your behalf. The sponsor already works at the company where you want to work or want to get promoted. In other words, a career sponsor is someone who will help you move into that new position because theyre in the right spot to put in a good word for you or make sure you get a legitimate shot.Sounds great, right? But if the idea is new to you, you may wonder how to find such a sponsor. Chances are you dont already have a good friend who is part of your companys senior management group. To create and build a relationship with a career sponsor, youll need to lay some groundwork. Here are a few ideas to helpBe patientLike any good relationship, this will take time. Dont go into the process expecting overnight success. Rather, be thoughtful and deliberate, building camaraderie through action and trust.PerformIt will be much easier to find a good advocate if youre already doing a great job. Make sure youre meeting all of your deadlines and exceeding your managers expectations. A potential sponsor is much mora likely to help you if youre a proven commodity.Identify good candidatesAllison Hemming, a career expert and CEO of New York-based talent agency Hired Guns, says in the Workopolis article that you cant just pick someone out of your company directory. Instead, she says, you should begin by asking yourself who in my company organization do I want to impress and have a relationship with? You might not be working for the person who will become your sponsor, and you may never work for that person, but how do you increase your engagement with that person? That might require a game plan. Start building a path to create some relevance between you and that person.Plan for a careful conversationEven if your chosen sponsor is someone who is familiar with you, proceed with caution, as this can be a delicate request, according to an article from Forbes. If you use this approach, articulate where youd like to go in your career, the skills you hold, the skills youre building, and the track record of execution you bring to the table.Give something backUnlike your mentor, your sponsor will expect to receive something in return for the work they do on your behalf. Find out how you can help them advance in their own career, and then follow throug h by providing that assistance. As noted in a Harvard Business Review article, Sponsors may advise or steer you, but their chief role is to develop you as a leader. Why? Not so much from like-mindedness or altruism, but because furthering your career helps further their career, organization or vision. Where a mentor might help you envision your next position, a sponsor will advocate for your promotion and lever open the door.Remember your goalsIf youre looking for a friend, you may not find one in your sponsor. In fact, you may not like everything they do. Thats OK. Efficacy trumps affinity youre looking not for a friend but an ally, the Harvard Business Review article says. Your targeted sponsor may exercise authority in a way you dont care to copy, but its their clout, not their style, that will turbocharge your career.Keep building the relationshipEven if youve proven your value to the company in the past, you cant afford to rest on your laurels once youve secured a sponsor. Show that you are productive, reliable, and trustworthy, and make them look good at every opportunity. A good sponsor will return the favor.Again, building rapport with an effective sponsor will take time. You cant expect to contact them one day and get a promotion the next. But if you are wise and deliberate, rahmen realistic expectations and helping them while they help you, your sponsor can help you leap over the obstacles that lie between you and your dream job. This article was originally posted on FlexJobs.com.

Front-End Framework in Web Development
Front-End Framework in Web DevelopmentFront-End Framework in Web DevelopmentIn the web development world, you encounter the terms front-end and back-end pretty frequently. Just to refresh, front-end development is all about the parts of a website that users see, while the back-end is mora about the behind the scenes functionality. Using a framework to construct your websites front-end has a lot of advantages (and is pretty easy to boot). Lets go over what front-end frameworks are and why you should consider incorporating them into your web development work. Front-End Framework Also referred to as CSS frameworks, these are packages containing pre-written, standardized code in files and folders. They give you a base to build on while still allowing flexibility with the final design. Typically, front-end frameworks contain the following components A grid which makes it simple to organize the design elements of your websiteDefined font styles and sizing that varies based on its funct ion (different typography for headings versus paragraphs, etc.)Pre-built website components like side panels, buttons, and navigation bars Depending on the specific framework you choose, theres a lot more they are capable of as well. Why Use One There are a lot of good reasons to use a front-end framework instead of starting all your code from scratch Save time Obviously, if youre writing every single line of code by yourself, its going to take a lot longer to launch your website. Frameworks can help get you started with the basics.Add extra components that you might not have otherwise. Its always nice to have the option to tack on another button or two without creating any extra hassle for yourself.Know for sure that the code works. Instead of spending a lot of time writing your own code only to discover that it doesnt work (or isnt compatible with 60% of web browsers), youll know that youre using pre-tested, functional code. Its also important to clarify how not to use front- end frameworks. Treating them as a replacement for having code-building skills wont do you any favors. Get familiar with HTML and CSS first, and then you can start using the shortcuts. Treat your framework as an assistant, not a crutch. Examples of Front-End Frameworks Not all CSS frameworks are created equal, so make sure to do your research about which one best fits your unique needs. Heres a quick overview of the top five Bootstrap The fruchtwein popular one out there. Has tons of stars on Github and lots of resources to get your questions answered. One of the easier ones to use, but some say it has a very distinctive Bootstrap look.Foundation Offers a lot of flexibility and customizability. Good for those who are experienced with front-end development and like to cover the basics while retaining a lot of creative control.Stylus Expressive and stylish CSS language. This framework can only be used on Node.js applications. Semantic UI Concise, intuitive, and makes debugging you r code nice and simple. Gives you a lot of design freedom and adapts to your needs.UI Kit The framework to use if youre interested in developing iOS apps. Has a basic style that makes it easy to develop your own site look. Conclusion Frameworks are incredibly helpful tools for front-end design, especially if you have a job where youre frequently developing that side. They allow you to speed up your workflow and increase your productivity without sacrificing quality or functionality, while still leaving the door open for a unique, customized look. Just remember to use them as a tool to complement your skills, not as a way to cut corners- and enjoy

7 Things to Consider Before You Ask a Friend for a Job Referral
7 Things to Consider Before You Ask a Friend for a Job Referral 7 Things to Consider Before You Ask a Friend for a Job Referral But before you make such a big ask of this person- no matter how close of a friend they are to you- there are a few things you should consider before. Heres what to ask yourself before you ask a friend for a job referral: 1. Do I really want the job? If you plan to ask a friend to put in a good word, or take the time to formally refer you, you should be sure youre truly interested in the opportunity. You shouldnt waste your time or theirs- and you dont want them to go out of their way to sing your praises, only to look like a fool when you turn down the invitation to come in for a job interview. If your friend fires off a job referral for you- and then you decline the job offer- it could put you on shaky ground with your buddy. Not to mention, if you do find a flexible job that you love in the future, your friend might not be so quick to make a second (or third) referral for you. So make sure that the job is really one that you want before enlisting others to help you close the deal and get hired. 2. Will this even help me, or them? Find out how this company treats referrals. Maybe they have an incentive program (e.g., any employee who refers someone who is hired gets a $500 referral bonus), or maybe HR doesnt treat referred candidates any differently than non-referred candidates. If its the latter, you may not want to bother your friend with this request. But if its the former, it can be a win-win for both of you. 3. Is this an appropriate request? How comfortable are you asking for this favor? How comfortable- or uncomfortable- do you think this friend would be? Consider feelings before you make the request. Also consider other factors, like how long this friend has worked for the company, the position they hold, whether youd asked them for this type of favor in the past, etc. If you feel confident that you wouldnt be putting them on the spot or in an uncomfortable situation, it may be fine. Otherwise, dont ask them for a referral. 4. Are we on good professional and personal terms? Sure, you thought that the little tiff you had with your friend was squashed, but he might not think so. If your friend is still harboring a grudge for something that you thought was water under the bridge, try to clear the air- and salvage the friendship- before you ask for a job referral. 5. What if they say no? Have you considered what would happen if your friend said no? How would you feel? How would this affect your relationship? If you feel that he could possibly say no, rethink your request. 6. Would I actually want to work with this person? And what would our working relationship be? If you were to land the job, this friend would become your coworker! How do you feel about this? How does he feel about it? How would it impact your friendship? Before you proceed, find out how closely youd be working togetherand have an open conversation about whether youd both be comfortable with it. This person may be your friend, but that doesnt mean you want him to be your boss. 7. Does he know my work ethic? Yes, youâve been friends since college, but that doesnât mean that your friend has a clue as to who you are professionally. When you ask your friend for a recommendation, sit down for a phone chat or coffee and offer some information about your professional background, your work ethic, and anything else you think he should know. Make sure to give him a debriefing on all of your professional accomplishments and accolades. If he were to go to HR to put in a good word and they ask him questions about your experience or background, youll want him to be prepared to answer them. Itâs true that asking for a job referral can be tricky. So before you text your friend asking for one, consider these seven questions to make sure that you donât put either of you in an awkward situation, and that you receive the job referral that you deserve.

Write a Resume Haiku
Write a Resume Haiku Write a Resume Haiku Write a Resume Haiku Ever notice that people tend to make things harder than they have to be? Wouldn't the job search be simpler, for example, if you could forgo the trouble of crafting a brilliant resume that details your past experience, and instead just sum up your essential nature, your true value, in the form of a haiku? In case you've forgotten, haiku is a Japanese form of non-rhyming poetry which, in English, contains three lines of5, 7, and5 syllables, respectively. The goal of a haiku is to paint a mental image in the reader's mind. And that's exactly the goal you're trying to achieve in a resume! But a resume does it in one or twopages (plus cover letter), while a haiku does it in 17 syllables. Give ita try! See if you can write aresume haiku that communicates a sense of what makes you a great job candidate, and helps readers picture you successfully fulfilling their business needs. This exercise is not only a fun time-waster, it might actually help you zero in on the core message you want to present to employers. How to rejuvenate your life this spring
How to rejuvenate your life this spring How to rejuvenate your life this spring Spring is the time for rejuvenation. Flowers bloom, animals start having their babies, and everything that lays dormant in the winter starts to come back to life. This cycle happens to wildlife every year, so why donât we also follow suit? Sometimes things in our life negatively change at a pace that makes us almost oblivious to the shift. This spring, itâs time to take inventory of our lives and rejuvenate those things. It might mean being conscious of your body and what goes into it, living in the moment, repairing the pain points, or doing more while settling less. Removing the toxic parts of our lives is always important. Once thatâs done, feelings of renewal sit in its place.First, taking inventoryThe first step to rejuvenating your life this spring is to take inventory of your life. What are the things youâd like to change? What has been bothering you? What makes you happy? Answering these questions will help give you direction for the rest of your journey of renewal. Ma ybe you feel like youâre working too much, you want to spend more time with family, you are unhappy with your surroundings, or youâre putting off too many responsibilities. Write these things down and then you can start making plans for change. Itâs just as important to write down what youâre happy about and make a conscious effort to keep those things up - and not just focusing on the negatives.Being conscious of your bodyThis doesnât mean being body conscious but instead being focused on how your body reacts to things and making sure that every decision for your body is a good one. Feeling healthy, strong, and happy are important aspects in feeling renewed. If your anxiety is keeping you from sleeping, try a weighted blanket to help you sleep. If coffee upsets your stomach, try switching to tea. Find a way to keep your body active, even if that means going for a short walk or standing at your desk instead of sitting. These small changes can really help your body to fee l better overall.Living in the momentTake more time to feel connected to your life by being more present. Living in the moment doesnât have to be as cheesy as it sounds; it just means being mindful and aware. It means feeling grounded in the world around you and not preoccupied by the distractions. Take photos of what spring looks like around you, go to a coffee date by yourself, or walk down a street youâve never been down before. If you see someone and think of something nice about them, say it out loud to them. Do something nice. Take a calculated tech break, social media break, or work break for a small portion of each day in order to stay grounded. Youâd be amazed at just how freeing it is to make the conscious decision to live in the moment.Repairing the Pain pointsThis is where your inventory comes in. What are your pain points? If you are unhappy with your surroundings, work towards getting rid of junk so that you feel lighter. Rearrange your things or buy a plant. Do you have overdue doctor appointments? Schedule them. Are you in credit card debt? Work towards a working budget to get your payments back on track in order to improve your credit. Are you behind on a project? Make a plan to get on top of it. You donât have to do everything today, but getting organized and making a plan is the first step towards turning these pain points into successes.Doing more, settling lessSometimes the thing that is making us feel heavy or overwhelmed is that we are spending our time with the wrong things. This spring, do more - but do the things that make you feel alive and happy. Donât do the things that drain you. Life is full of obligations, and of course, weâd rather be focusing on self-love all day instead of grocery shopping, but thatâs not realistic. Realistic changes are to take a weekend to hike with your dog instead of losing a weekend by settling to cover yet another shift at work, for example. Donât feel bad about doing more things you wa nt to do that will improve your mood and less things that others need you to do.Removing the toxicityToxicity can look different for each person. For some people itâs unhealthy food; for some itâs too much time spent with video games or on your phone; and for others its spending time with toxic people. If you have any toxicity in your life, take this spring to work on removing it. Find what is bringing you down and work to purge it from your life.Itâs also worth noting whether or not youâre the toxic thing in your own life or someone elseâs life. Take an honest look at your own behavior and the behaviors of others. Do your best to be the best you can be - at everything. Expect that from others in your life. Whether itâs avoiding harmful gossip, making healthier decisions, or removing yourself from harmful people, removing the toxicity from your life will be a huge rejuvenation to your life this spring. The seasons are changing, and the world is visibly looking a lot dif ferent. The days are longer, the weather is more welcoming, and plants are sprouting out of the earth from their hiding places. You donât have to just be a spectator in the renewal around you - you can be a part of it as well. Nobodyâs perfect, and everyone has something they can improve on. This spring, decide on what parts of your life can use some rejuvenation. This post was originally published on YourCoffeeBreak.co.uk.

Employment Law and Your Rights
Employment Law and Your Rights Employment Law and Your Rights A quick reference sheet of what employers reference as they consider your candidacy.Employment laws often weigh on employers and influence more than you may think. Not exactly clear on what your rights as a job seeker are? Iâve compiled the handy list below, packed with links to government sites with more information, as a reference for executives like you who are going through the job-search process. Most hiring decisions are governed by rules and regulations. Itâs the law, folks. Yet candidates are likely to underestimate how many hiring decisions are based on existing law. Hereâs hoping you never need to use it with a careless employer, but itâs important to know the rules of the game youâre playing.Unlike the sinister motives outlined in the movie âThe Devilâs Advocate,â most employment laws developed years ago and amended continuously until today were meant to protect us and to encourage employers to do the right thing. Hereâs a primer of what employers referenc e as they consider you for employment:Preference This includes but is not limited to discrimination and harassment: Age The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA), which protects individuals who are 40 years of age or older; Race Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII), which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin; The Civil Rights Act of 1991, which, among other things, provides monetary damages in cases of intentional employment discrimination. Gender The Equal Pay Act of 1963 (EPA), which protects men and women who perform substantially equal work in the same establishment from sex-based wage discrimination; Disability Sections 501 and 505 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prohibit discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities who work in the federal government; and Title I and Title V of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), which prohibit employment discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities in the private sector, and in state and local governments; Hiring Requirements Medical and drug testing Title I and Title V of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), which prohibit employment discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities in the private sector, and in state and local governments; State Laws Running background checks and credit checks Fair Credit Reporting Act, State Laws All employment contracts: provisions, non-compete agreements, terminations and more State Law (every state has a law on non-competes) Hiring immigrant workers Immigration Reform and Control Act William Joseph Austin, Jr., a pre-eminent employment law attorney with Ward Smith P.A. in Raleigh, N.C., points out that EEO laws, both federal and state, impose a deep and abiding constraint on employer discretion in the entire process. Times being what they are, the trajectory is toward more regulation in the future, not less. Austin goes on to note recent changes in hiring: âMost recently Congress expanded the âDisabilitiesâ in the Americans with Disabilities Act by repudiating overly restrictive Supreme Court opinions and also by augmenting the ADA definition and interpretation of âdisability.âAustin also notices that job seekers are protected on the basis of such an ever-growing list of classifications, characteristics, traits, and conditions that no employer can afford to undertake seat-of-the-pants recruitment and hiring. Careless employers pay a high price.

6 Tips for Job Seekers to Avoid Tricky Social Media Situations
6 Tips for Job Seekers to Avoid Tricky Social Media Situations 6 Tips for Job Seekers to Avoid Tricky Social Media Situations For better or worse, many employers are searching for candidates online before they ever call them for an interview. And we want to help job seekers avoid tricky social media situations that could hurt their chances of being hired. Employers screen candidates on social media for a number of reasons: Some employers find it more appealing or easier to learn about a candidate through their online profiles rather than just their resume and cover letter. Some are looking to confirm the data youve given them in your application materials. Some are looking to see if you would be a good representative of their company, especially if the role is a client- or public-focused position. In researching candidates on social media, many recruiters mainly look to see how job seekers portray themselves online professionally and to see if they can learn any more details about their professional history. Many prefer using LinkedIn for this, and some do general Google searches to see if anything else pops up. Six Ways to Avoid Tricky Social Media Situations 1. Avoid these social media red flags. Two big red flags employers are looking for: either no online presence at all (even a basic LinkedIn profile) or inconsistent online profiles that either dont back up the information on a resume, or profiles that actually contradict resume information. If youre actively submitting applications, make sure your online presence (including social media sites like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn) is consistent with you as a professional. No social media presence at all can be a red flag for employers because so many of todays jobs are based in the knowledge economy, which requires a good amount of activity online. If an employer thinks you arent very active online, they may (rightly or wrongly) think you arent up to date when it comes to skills and knowledge. 2. Use social media to your advantage. The good news is that this is actually an opportunity for you to stand out! On a resume, you are limited as to what you show employers. But online, you can create a very detailed portrait of yourself as a professional. The next few points offer some ideas to use social media to your advantage as a professional. 3. Your LinkedIn profile should go beyond descriptions of your jobs. The Summary section is a fantastic place to stand out and show the value you bring to any organization. Wondering what to fill that blank space with? How about answers to these questions: What are your expertise areas? Your best skills? Your most valuable assets? Why are you passionate about this industry or career field? Also, include links to projects youve worked on and take advantage of LinkedIns publishing platform to write knowledgeable articles about the industry you work in, trends in the field, and anything else that can show you know your stuff. 4. On sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, consider showcasing your professional side more prominently. Twitter, in particular, is a great place to interact with other professionals in your field in casual but memorable ways. And that includes recruiters and hiring managers! But if you want to keep them strictly social, make sure your privacy settings are turned up to the highest level possible! 5. Donât go crazy on social media after youâve landed a job. Again, for better or for worse, we live in an era where everything is connected. Many teams operate in a way where coworkers, and even managers and workers, are connecting on social media. If you decide to become friends with your boss on Facebook, you have to assume that they will see everything you post. And even if its unfair, they may associate your posts as a reflection of you as a professional. Weve seen lots of examples of people being fired because of the things they post online- offensive comments, inappropriate pictures, risky social media handles, you name it. 6. Come up with a plan for connecting with coworkers and managers on social media (or not). This completely depends on what you post on each social media channel. Think long and hard about how you use a channel like Facebook or Instagram before accepting a friend request from a coworker or boss. If theres even a slight chance they will see something offensive, inappropriate, or questionable from you, dont accept the request. You might also consider using one social media channel for professional connections and others for casual or friendly connections. For example, I use Twitter and LinkedIn almost exclusively for professional connections, but Facebook mainly for friends and family. If you decide not to connect with work folks on social media, explain to your boss or coworker why you didnt accept their request- that you only use that channel to connect with close friends or relatives- so they know you arent blowing them off or being rude.

How many people can be in a meeting before its unproductive
How many people can be in a meeting before it's unproductive How many people can be in a meeting before it's unproductive Meetings are at peak production level when there are fewer people involved - specifically, no more than eight, according to Harvard Business Review.Smaller groups build a sense of intimacy that allows group members to be more communicative and create a livelier discussion, according to recent research by Robert Sutton, a professor of organizational behavior at Stanford University. Fewer people also creates more time for each personâs viewpoint to be highlighted and heard.Larger meetings are often the result of managers wanting to be inclusive with the invitation list. Not wanting to leave any employee out, managers end up sacrificing quality of the meeting by increasing the number of people involved. And, according to Sutton, the most productive meeting contains five to eight people. At more than eight people, the conversation and the productivity level begins to decline in a number of ways. Not everyone is able to participate in the conversation. The meeting may lack substant ial back-and-forth debate Unproductive conversation like personal sharing and catch-ups create distractions from business discussions. People become shyer and less likely to speak their minds, and tough topics are not discussed and tough decisions are not made.Inevitably, people lose respect for the meeting altogether, leaving many involved frustrated - making it nearly impossible to accomplish all of the meetingâs goals and potentially forcing another meeting to be held. In order to prevent the chaos that comes with overcrowded meetings, initiate smaller group discussions. But make sure to go about this change in the right way.Be transparentBe transparent with your staff about the change. Tell them you are decreasing the number of people invited to specific meetings in order to increase productivity levels at said meetings. Point them to the research that backs up your decision about groups with eight people or less. And tell them not to take it personally if they are not includ ed in a meeting they previously would have been included in.Be strategic with your invite listsYour goal is now to increase productivity, which can only be done by including the right people in the room for each topic. Ask yourself who has the most knowledge about the subject of discussion, who will be working on the implementation of a decision, who will be directly impacted by decisions made, and who might learn from participating. Have a clear idea of what the meeting will be focused on and what will be discussed, so you can narrow your inclusivity to the perfect staff members.Encourage active participationAccording to Harvard Business Review, you should encourage your employees to take ownership of their ideas. Encourage them not only to speak their minds but also to listen patiently and attentively. And - in order to further increase productivity - encourage them to be concise in their points. Have a clearly formed idea before sharing it with the group.Monitor successEnsure y our newly implemented meetings are working. Collect feedback and continue to alter your plan as necessary. Every company and every team is different. Make sure you are implementing the right changes for your group, and make sure your employees are both benefiting from and enjoying your new management style. This article first appeared on Fairygodboss.

Here are the 11 habits of supremely happy people
Here are the 11 habits of supremely happy people Here are the 11 habits of supremely happy people Weâre always chasing something- be it a promotion, a new car, or a significant other. This leads to the belief that, âWhen (blank) happens, Iâll finally be happy.âWhile these major events do make us happy at first, research shows this happiness doesnât last. A study from Northwestern University measured the happiness levels of regular people against those who had won large lottery prizes the year prior. The researchers were surprised to discover that the happiness ratings of both groups were practically identical. The mistaken notion that major life events dictate your happiness and sadness is so prevalent that psychologists have a name for it: impact bias. The reality is, event-based happiness is fleeting.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Happiness is synthetic- you either create it, or you donât. Happiness that lasts is earned through your habits. Supremely ha ppy people have honed habits that maintain their happiness day in, day out. Try out their habits, and see what they do for you:They slow down to appreciate lifeâs little pleasures. By nature, we fall into routines. In some ways, this is a good thing. It saves precious brainpower and creates comfort. However, sometimes you get so caught up in your routine that you fail to appreciate the little things in life. Happy people know how important it is to savor the taste of their meal, revel in the amazing conversation they just had, or even just step outside to take a deep breath of fresh air. They exercise. Getting your body moving for as little as 10 minutes releases GABA, a neurotransmitter that makes your brain feel soothed and keeps you in control of your impulses. Happy people schedule regular exercise and follow through on it because they know it pays huge dividends for their mood. They spend money on other people. Research shows that spending money on other people makes you muc h happier than spending it on yourself. This is especially true of small things that demonstrate effort, such as going out of your way to buy your friend a book that you know they will like. They surround themselves with the right people. Happiness spreads through people. Surrounding yourself with happy people builds confidence, stimulates creativity, and itâs flat-out fun. Hanging around negative people has the opposite effect. They want people to join their pity party so that they can feel better about themselves. Think of it this way: If a person were smoking, would you sit there all afternoon inhaling the second-hand smoke? Youâd distance yourself, and you should do the same with negative people. They stay positive. Bad things happen to everyone, including happy people. Instead of complaining about how things could have been or should have been, happy people reflect on everything theyâre grateful for. Then they find the best solution available to the problem, tackle it, an d move on. Nothing fuels unhappiness quite like pessimism. The problem with a pessimistic attitude, apart from the damage it does to your mood, is that it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy: if you expect bad things, youâre more likely to experience negative events. Pessimistic thoughts are hard to shake off until you recognize how illogical they are. Force yourself to look at the facts, and youâll see that things are not nearly as bad as they seem. They get enough sleep. Iâve beaten this one to death over the years and canât say enough about the importance of sleep to improving your mood, focus, and self-control. When you sleep, your brain literally recharges, removing toxic proteins that accumulate during the day as byproducts of normal neuronal activity. This ensures that you wake up alert and clear-headed. Your energy, attention, and memory are all reduced when you donât get enough quality sleep. Sleep deprivation also raises stress hormone levels on its own, even with out a stressor present. Happy people make sleep a priority, because it makes them feel great and they know how lousy they feel when theyâre sleep deprived. They have deep conversations. Happy people know that happiness and substance go hand-in-hand. They avoid gossip, small talk, and judging others. Instead they focus on meaningful interactions. They engage with other people on a deeper level, because they know that doing so feels good, builds an emotional connection, and is an interesting way to learn. They help others. Taking the time to help people not only makes them happy, but it also makes you happy. Helping other people gives you a surge of oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, all of which create good feelings. In a Harvard study, employees who helped others were 10 times more likely to be focused at work and 40% more likely to get a promotion. The same study showed that people who consistently provided social support were the most likely to be happy during times of high stre ss. As long as you make certain that you arenât overcommitting yourself, helping others is sure to have a positive influence on your mood. They make an effort to be happy. No one wakes up feeling happy every day and supremely happy people are no exception. They just work at it harder than everyone else. They know how easy it is to get sucked into a routine where you donât monitor your emotions or actively try to be happy and positive. Happy people constantly evaluate their moods and make decisions with their happiness in mind. They do things in-person. Happy people only let technology do their talking when absolutely necessary. The human brain is wired for in-person interaction, so happy people will jump at the chance to drive across town to see a friend or meet face-to-face because it makes them feel good. They have a growth mindset. Peopleâs core attitudes fall into one of two categories: a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. With a fixed mindset, you believe you are who you are and you cannot change. This creates problems when youâre challenged, because anything that appears to be more than you can handle is bound to make you feel hopeless and overwhelmed. People with a growth mindset believe that they can improve with effort. This makes them happier because they are better at handling difficulties. They also outperform those with a fixed mindset because they embrace challenges, treating them as opportunities to learn something new.Bringing It All TogetherHappiness can be tough to maintain, but investing in the right habits pays off. Tell me what you did today, and Ill tell you who you are
Tell me what you did today, and Iâll tell you who you are Tell me what you did today, and Iâll tell you who you are You live your life in 24 hour periods. How you use those 24 hour periods determines who you become and how successful youâll be.If you learn to master your day, youâll learn how to master your weeks, months, years, and life. All you need to do is become very, very good at living each day.The problem most people face is that they start their day off wrong, which puts them on a downward spiral throughout their whole day. Momentum is created or destroyed every day with the first few decisions you make.Additionally, few people spend time planning and imagining the life they want to have and the person they want to become. Very few people live intentionally each day toward a higher vision. Most people are solely living day-to-day, rather than maximizing each day to make enormous progress toward a bigger and better future.âYou are what you repeatedly do.â - Will DurantHow is your day going, today?Seriously.Look back on all the things youâve done so far. Did you act like the pers on you wish to become? If you repeated today every day for the next year, realistically, where would you end up?If you are to really accomplish your goals and dreams, how much differently would your regular day need to be than today was?Did you interact with people who remind you more of your future, or more of your past?In order to achieve your dreams, what does a ânormalâ day look like? One of the best ways to consciously design your ideal life is to start with your ideal day. What does that actually look like? What activities must happen daily for you to live exactly how you want to be living?- - - In this article, Iâm going to show you: How you can consistently live better and better days How you can set-up your days the night before in order to make success inevitable How to consistently make more progress each day than most people make in a month or year How to create the life you can only imagine Letâs start:4 things your brain needs daily to thriveBefore diving into how to create an optimal day, itâs important to take a look at your brain, and what makes your brain happy. At the most basic level, your brain needs 4 things in order to thrive: Nutrition Oxygen Information Love NutritionâWhen a man makes his thoughts pure, he no longer desires impure food.â - James AllenThe quality of food you put into your body matters. You become what you consume, literally. The best foods for brain health include: Nuts and seeds - particularly almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds Vegetables - particularly avocados, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, and beets Leafy greens - particularly spinach, broccoli, celery, and kale Fish - particularly salmon, sardines, and tuna Berries - particularly blueberries, strawberries, and acai berries Spices - particularly cinnamon, sage, thyme, and turmeric Healthy fats - particularly coconut oil and olive oil Dark chocolate - one of the only foods shown to acutely boost mood, focus, and alertness, according to a University of Nottingham study Healthy grains - University of Toronto researchers recently determined that eating carbohydrate-rich foods like oatmeal is equivalent to a shot of glucose, a.k.a. blood sugar, injected into your brain The worst foods for brain health include: Anything with artificial sugar - particularly fruit juices, soda, candy Anything that has artificial and white flour Alchohol Most dairy OxygenâBack in the day, the majority of exercise studies focused on the parts of the body from the neck down, like the heart and lungs. But now we are finding that we need to go north, to the brain, to show the true benefits of a physically active lifestyle on an individual.â - Ozioma Okonkwo, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public HealthThe amount of oxygen your brain gets determines how well it functions. Just because you breath air doesnât mean your brain is getting the quantity and quality of oxygen it needs to thrive. The brain uses about three times as much oxygen as muscles in the body do Brain cells are very sensitive to decreases in oxygen levels and donât survive or function well very long without it Daily fitness is essential to brain health and having a body that can provide maximal oxygen to your brain. Specifically: One study found that daily fitness is good for memory and decreases chances of Alzheimerâs Okonkwoâs research has shown that people who exercise have greater brain volume in areas of the brain associated with reasoning and executive function. In an interview with TIME, he stated, âWeâve done a series of studies showing that increased aerobic capacity boosts brain structure, function and cognition,â he says, âOther people have found exercise can improve mood.â Aerobic exercise, like running and swimming, appears to be best for brain health since these increase your heart rate, âwhich means the body pumps more blood to the brain,â says Okonkwo. But strength training, like weight lifting, may also bring benefits to the brain by increasing heart rate.InformationYour brain needs information to process in order to continually develop new connections. If the brain isnât firing, itâs not wiring, and this ages it.If you donât use your brain, you lose it very quickly. Memory fades and reality becomes less clear and compelling. The problem with most of the information people consume is that it is repetitive and low quality - like putting junk in your car, it doesnât help your brain function well, but actually damages it long-term. For example, scanning Facebook or passively scanning articles like this one donât challenge the brain enough. In order for your brain to thrive, you need to continually give it higher quality information, whic h is often above your cognitive level. You also want to learn actively, which means youâre taking notes and linking what youâre learning in your memory through visualization.Your memory is entirely based on connection and imagination. So when youâre learning something new, you want to be very active and imaginative with that information. You want to link what youâre learning with as many other things as possible. The more visual and exaggerated you are with how you approach new information, the more memorable it will be. As you change your memory, you change yourself. Thus, learning is not about retaining or storing information, but rather, it is about reframing your entire paradigm. Thus, the purpose of information is not simply to put more information into the existing mental model you currently have. True learning is emotional and imaginative - thus, it is intended to reframe your entire mental model. If you donât see and operate differently in the world, you didnât c hange.Change is very, very good for the brain. Itâs one of the best ways to anti-age your brain and keep it healthy. Doing the same things over and over and not continually pushing and expanding your mindset and mental model is very bad for the brain. It trains your brain to be lazy. It keeps you stuck in a limiting identity and with an aging and decaying brain.See the world differently every day.Learn something new that changes how you view the world every day. This is how you heal your brain, keep it young, and keep it healthy.LoveâLove is friendship that has caught fire. It is quiet understanding, mutual confidence, sharing and forgiving. It is loyalty through good and bad times. It settles for less than perfection and makes allowances for human weaknesses.â - Ann LandersResearch has shown that babies who donât receive love can die. Oxygen and nutrition arenât enough. The brain thrives on physical touch and emotional connection. For over 75 years, Harvardâs Grant and Glueck study has tracked the physical and emotional health of two groups: 456 poor people in Boston from 1939 to 2014 (the Grant Study) 268 graduates from Harvardâs classes of 1939â"1944 (the Glueck study) After following these groups and testing them (e.g., blood samples, brain scans) for several decades, the findings have been compiled.Hereâs the conclusion:âThe clearest message that we get from this 75-year study is this: Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. Period.â - Robert Waldinger, director of the Harvard Study of Adult DevelopmentAs Melanie Curtin reported on Inc., âThe biggest predictor of your happiness and fulfillment overall in life is, basically, love.âAlthough the Harvard study lays the foundation, there is other compelling research on the importance of human relationships. This meta analysis showed a 50% increased likelihood of survival for participants with stronger social relationships. Put simply, if you have healthy relationships, your chances of survival increase by 50%.The most loving and deep relationships are built on a very simple foundation: giving and gratitude. When the focus is on what you can give, rather than what you can get, the r elationship becomes a gift to both of you.Thereâs no holding back.No keeping score.Only in such relationships can you be fully present to the moment and fully un-inhibited in the expression of your love.- - - Every single day, you need: good nutrition oxygen information and love. Without these, your brain and soul will not thrive, but instead will shrivel and die. These are the basics that you should build your day around. The rest of this article focuses on prioritization and productivity. If you are intentional and strategic, you can achieve more in one day than most people achieve in a week.Even more, if youâre clear about what you want, you can make enormous progress, daily, toward important goals. Making clear and powerful progress daily is more than many people can say theyâve done in years. Many if not most people are not pointing their life in a desired direction. They are in jobs and relationships they hate. Put simply, they are climbing a ladder that is facing the wrong wall. As bestselling author, Ryan Holiday has said, âThis is a fundamental irony of most peopleâs lives. They donât quite know what they want to do with their lives. Yet they are very active.âThus, if you can make tangible progress in a desired direction every single day, yo uâll be living far more powerfully and intentionally than most of the population. If you can add productivity and courage to your day, you can radically transform your whole life in a matter of a few short years. For the remainder of this article, Iâll cover: Setting yourself up for success the evening before Having an optimal morning routine And living daily such that youâre continually expanding both inside and outside as a person Use Ernest Hemingwayâs evening routine for maximized creativity and productivityâThe best way is always to stop when you are going good and when you know what will happen next. If you do that every day ⦠you will never be stuck ⦠That way your subconscious will work on it all the time. But if you think about it consciously or worry about it you will kill it and your brain will be tired before you start.â - Ernest HemingwayApparently, Ernest Hemingway would stop his writing sessions mid-sentence. He did this for a few reasons: So that his subconscious would continue chewing-on the idea So that when he started writing again the next day, he didnât have to start from scratch, but could continue where he left off (already with a sense of momentum ⦠) Your evening routine doesnât need to be long. But like Hemingway, itâs good to know exactly what youâre going to do when you wake up. Itâs good to have done even just a little bit of work so that you have somewhere to pick-up when you first get started.Facing a blank slate first thing in the morning can be difficult. If you take just a few minutes to consider what youâre first going to do, and even give a minute or two of thought as to what that will involve, then you donât have to start from scratch.Pull out your journal just before bed and write down the first few things youâre going to do the next morning. Then, as it relates to the first task or project, write down a few ideas related to that thing.Your brain is far more creative in the morning and far more analytical at night. Use your analytical evening strength to provide a simple plan and starting-point so your creative morning brain can run wild when you first wake up.Thereâs one more side-benefit to creating a runway for your next morning. As Hemingway stated, your subconscious will then be able to focus on and make important connections while you sleep. Thomas Edison did this himself, which is why he was such a prolific and productive creative person (something rare, indeed). He actually had a process. In his own words, âNever go to sleep without a request to your subconscious.â- - - This morning routine will save you 20+ hours per weekâTypically, we have a window of about three hours where weâre really, really focused. Weâre able to have some strong contributions in terms of planning, in terms of thinking, in terms of speaking well,â - Dr. Rod Friedman told Harvard Business ReviewAccording to psychologist Ron Friedman, the first three hours of your day are your most precious for maximized productivity. This makes sense on several levels. Letâs start with sleep. Research confirms the brain, specifically the prefrontal cortex, is most active and readily creative immedi ately following sleep. Your subconscious mind has been loosely mind-wandering while you slept, making contextual and temporal connections. So, immediately following sleep, your mind is most readily active to do thoughtful work.On a different level, the science of willpower and self-control confirm that your willpower - or energy levels - are strongest immediately following sleep. The longer you go throughout your day, the less willpower you have. In other words, you experience decision fatigue throughout your day.So, your brain is most attuned first thing in the morning, and so are your energy levels. Consequently, the best time to do your best work is during the first three hours of your day.During your morning time, you want to do a few important things: Super-hydration - drink 20â"40 ounces of water - this will wake you up, making you more alert (your brain needs oxygen to function well) Pull out your journal and begin writing Create a mind-map of your ideal self Write about the top 1-3 things you want to achieve that day The purpose of this 10-30 minute morning journal session is to reframe yourself as the person you want to become. You want to put yourself into a peak and heightened state where you can live with intention.Creating a mind-map and also writing down your future goals is very powerful because it reshapes your mindset and memory. Mind-maps when done right work both your right and left brains because they are intended to be visual and emotionally stimulating. In other words, you donât want to simply write down your goals. You want images and pictures of your future self and dreams to be in your face. The more imaginative, emotional, and exaggerated, the more they will become real to you; the more theyâll shape your memory and identity.Every day, you should write down and visualize your future self and dreams. Then, you want to be results-oriented throughout your day in order to achieve those dreams as fast as possible. When you begin your day right, you start with confidence and momentu m. Little wins in the morning lead to big wins throughout your day and throughout your life.Start right, end right.Start with vision and focus and youâll be moving in a clear direction, rather than aimlessly moving without direction. After youâve put yourself into a peak and intentional state, itâs good to begin working on the project you left undone or created a simple plan for the night before. If you work on your most important work first thing in the morning and without distraction, youâll make progress daily. Over enough time, youâll have made HUGE progress. This is what Darren Hardy calls The Compound Effect. As he stated, âItâs not the big things that add up in the end; itâs the hundreds, thousands, or millions of little things that separate the ordinary from the extraordinary.âAfter youâve emotionally and imaginatively created and experienced your future vision, and after youâve done your most important and creative work, then itâs time to get the body moving. Itâs time to workout and give your brain a little bit of a break! But also, as you exercise, youâre also giving your brain a HUGE boost, which will provide you with tons of energy and cognitive ability for the rest of your day!If your 3-5 hours before your workout were focused, you could probably be done for the day. Youâll have made more progress in your morning than many people make in weeks or months.- - - Use âforcing functionsâ to become results-focusedâWherever you are, make sure youâre there.â - Dan SullivanIf youâre like most people, your workday is a blend of low-velocity work mixed with continual distraction (e.g., social media and email). Most peopleâs âworking timeâ is not done at peak performance levels. When most people are working, they do so in a relaxed fashion. Makes sense, they have plenty of time to get it done. However, when you are results-oriented, rather than âbeing busy,â youâre 100 percent on when youâre working and 100 percent off when youâre not. Why do anything half-way? If youâre going to work, youâre going to work.To get the best results in your fitness, research has found that shorter but more intensive exercise is more effective than longer drawn-out exercise. The concept is simple: Intensive activity followed by high quality rest and recovery. Most of the growth actually comes during the recovery process. However, the only way to truly recover is by actually pushing yourself to exhaustion during the workout. The same concept applies to work. The best work happens in short intensive spurts. By short, Iâm talking 1-3 hours. But this must be âDeep Work,â with no distractions, just like an intensive workout is non-stop. Interestingly, your best work - which for most people is thinking - will actually happen while youâre away from your work, ârecovering.âIn one study, only 16 percent of respondents reported getting creative insight while at work. Ideas generally came while the person was at home, in transportation, or during recreational activity. âThe most creative ideas arenât going to come while sitting in front of your monitor,â says Scott Birnbaum, a vice president of Samsung Semiconductor. The reason for this is simple. When youâre working directly on a task, your mind is tightly focused on the problem at hand (i.e., direct reflection). Conversely, when youâre not working, your mind loosely wanders (i.e., indirect reflection). While driving or doing some other form of recreation, the external stimuli in your environment (like the buildings or other landscapes around you) subconsciously prompt memories and other thoughts. Because your mind is wandering both contextually (on different subjects) and temporally between past, present, and future, your brain will make distant and distinct connections related to the problem youâre trying to solve (eureka!)Case in point: when youâre working, be at work. When youâre not working, stop workin g. By taking your mind off work and actually recovering, youâll get creative breakthroughs related to your work. You can ensure that youâre fully present in what youâre doing by applying a concept known as âforcing functions.â According to entrepreneur, Dan Martell:âA forcing function is any task, activity or event that forces you to take action and produce a result. I believe the best way to work is to put ourselves into a position to execute. Essentially, forcing us to complete a task.âForcing functions are situational factors you put into place to ensure you succeed. In other words, you want to set up your environment so that your default and subconscious behavior is what you want it to be. You also want to set things up so that self-sabotage is difficult. Here are a few examples: When youâre done with work, leave your phone at your office (this will force you to be present when youâre home) Remove all unhealthy food from your house (make one decision that frees your mind from having to consciously control or suppress your behavior) Work at a library and leave your laptop charger at home (so you only have a few hours to work until your computer dies) Set short timelines (âTo achieve great things you need 1) a plan, and 2) not enough timeâ - Meg Jay TED talk) High investment - when you begin investing money into a goal, you immediately become emotionally committed Do at least one thing daily that terrifies youâA personâs success in life can usually be measured by the number of uncomfortable conversations he or she is willing to have.â - Tim FerrissBut you donât have to constantly be battling your fears. Actually, Darren Hardy has said that you can be a coward 99.9305556% of the time (to be exact). You only need to be courageous for 20 seconds at a time.Twenty seconds of fear is all you need. If you courageously confront fear for 20 seconds every single day, before you know it, youâll be in a different socio-economic and social situation.According to Wayne Gretzky, the best hockey player of all time, âYou miss 100% of the shots you donât take.âMake that call.Ask that question.Pitch that idea.Post that video.Reach out to that potential mentor. If you do one or even a few things daily that are outside of your comfort zone, eventually youâll be living a different life. Although most of your courageous attempts may not be success ful, some of them will succeed. Sometimes, youâll catch a âluckyâ break. And these breaks are what separate you from the masses.Even more important though is that youâll become more confident in yourself. You cannot have confidence without positive and goal-directed behavior. You also cannot get motivation and momentum without being active and moving.Your network is your net worth. Do whatever you can to get access to the people you want to work with and work for.Be bold.- - - ConclusionHow you spend each day matters. If you optimize for brain health, priority, and productivity, you can live a masterful life. You can make enormous progress in all that you do.You can create and achieve enormous visions.Every day, your brain will change because youâll be learning new things and becoming a new person.Enjoy this beautiful life.
